Slave Jail, Yellow Bayou Plantation, Chicot County [graphic]. [195-?]

Negative of Slave Jail at the Yellow Bayou Plantation in Chicot County, Arkansas from the book "Negro Slavery in Arkansas" by Orville W. Taylor (Durham, N.C.: Duke University Press, 1958). The photograph was taken by Orville Taylor. Owned by the estate by Junius W. Craig, the Yellow Bayou and Bellevue Plantations were together comprised of 211 slaves who were placed into various labor divisions in 1860. Taylor speculates that the jail was used primarily as punishment for the slaves on Yellow Bayou and Bellevue and may have been used for slaves from nearby plantations, detention for runaway slaves or for confinement of slaves being sold.
